Changes in technology over the years

Technology has changed drastically over the many years on the design and creation of graphic images and is continuing to change. This change has made our lives of use technology easier by being better and easier to use.

Mobile phones: This is one that has had a huge change from years ago. They were “Bricks”, as many call them, with an aerial on the top. They had no screens on them, just the number keys. They also had a lot of static and noise interference and were less reliable. In the late 1940’s, they had the idea of using of something to communicate with others was created. The first mobile phones were used for police and taxis to be able to communicate. This spread wide to what it is today, to be able to communicate with everyone we meet. Mobile phones we use today are small enough to fit in our pockets and have screens to display the images. When the first game on a mobile, Snake, came out, everyone thought it was amazing and they wanted to get it. Now, phones can play many games. They can access the Internet, play games, take videos, play music, take pictures and many other incredible things that no one imagined it could do. We expect phones to have good graphics, like being able to use models for games and colours, unlike when the first mobiles started to come out, where it had a green background and black pixels. All phones have to be able to use all these different things, like Facebook and other Internet sites or they will be sent back and the company won't make any money. Mobile phones have a camera and can take pictures. As the phones got better, so did the images with better quality and higher resolution making the images have better colour quality and look smoother. These pictures can be used on a computer on editing software. Because of the better quality, the images are much easier to edit on these softwares. Phones can also use GPS tracking devices, which is very helpful to us. The phone has evolved to be able to show the map on screen and to be able to detect where you are.

Printers: Printers have also changed. They used to produce images with such a low quality, but when compared with today’s printer, there is a big difference. Our printers today produce images with a high quality, which brings out the colour and makes printed images look smoother. They began being manually controlled and very slow, but then changed to be automatic and being ran from steam. These were used in commercial printing companies who could afford them. Printers then started getting faster and the quality images they produced got better. Their prices decreased, allowing everyone to be able to afford a printer. Today’s printers are paired with the computer to work better. There are also many different types of printers to be able to produce images from, such as laser printers and ink jet printers. Prints are now able to print 3D. To do this, you make a 3D graphic and print it out as a solid object. This has even been used to replicate areas of the human body, such as ears, limbs, and noses, to help those who have lost parts of their body. A 3D printer can also print food which is edible. This could end world hunger easily. They can also print stem cells of animals, which can then be used to test drugs. Animal testing will no longer be needed. They say in 5-10 years, we will all have 3D printers in our homes.

Computer monitors: These used to be big and clunky, with a screen that would come out slightly and a back that was huge. Today, our computer monitors have a flat screen and a small back. Image quality on the monitors has changed. They first used to be black and green, which used to hurt people’s eyes. These were known as CRT monitors, which stands for cathode ray tube. This made them very dangerous as it released poisonous gasses if the computer was left on for too long. They also caused migranes and fits. Better quality computers do not have any harmful chemicals in then and are safe to use. They can cause headaches and eye pain, but nothing too harmful. Most computers now are LCD which stands for liquid crystal display. You can see the liquid if you press against the screen. This ensures the quality is always high. LED, which stands for light-emitting diode, monitors emit a light at the back which reduces the size and increases quality. It is better for graphical users to use LED monitors because of the increased resolution of the pixels. The graphics in computers have gotten better as they could only have pixels but are now able to use models for games and designing. Some computers can run Google Earth. This program has pictures of the world. Some monitors are touch screen, meaning you do not need a mouse to click things as you can touch them and may not even need a keyboard as the keys can appear on screen to touch. Chat programs and online blogs are now available. These do make people lazy and stop them from going outside, but is very helpful for people who have a fear of going outside. One woman who is a world prolific fashionista writes blogs about her life and takes photos of herself in clothes. If these hadn't existed, this woman may not have a career at all as she would not be able to contact anyone if there were jobs available she could do from her home.

The problems with technology

I believe technology is causing many problems. One main problem is that people no longer communicate like they did before. People used to talk face-to-face or write a letter and I think that is better as it allows people to go out more and to be able to see each other. Phones and email are making people lazy as they can just send a simple message in seconds. You could video call your friends or family, but it isn't really the same as going to see them in person.
Another problem is that technology can change things to an unrealistic way. A simple example of this that affects a lot of people is the use of photoshop on models for adverts. It makes the people look totally different to who is actually modelling for the advert. This causes to people think that is how they should look, and causes people mental and health issues just trying to look like the person on the advert.
A final issue that I would like to point out is that jobs are being lost to robots and machines who are capable or doing that job. Many people these days are already unable to get a job as there are simply none available. These people are then unable to earn money to live, and if this continues, more people will end up without the necessities that they need.
But the thing is, is it really bad or will it become a big help in the future? Things like 3D printing to restore lost limbs in an accident or to end world hunger are a good idea, but things like mobile phones has made us become lazy and will continue to get worse. What would happen if technology suddenly gave way?
